Scheduling School Holidays

Today is our first day back after our long Thanksgiving through New Years holiday, and this year we took an extra week because my husband had surgery last monday. The question, for me,  is always how to schedule school holidays so that they come at just the right time.

I hate the first day back.

I normally try to schedule holidays every  4-5 weeks so that it doesn’t get too overwhelming for them…or me. I know that we will be taking a week at Easter, a week at Memorial Day, a week at Fourth of July and a week at Labor Day. In addition we will break for the year at the end of November the week of Thanksgiving.

So figuring 180 days of school I figure up how many more days off we have coming to us and schedule them as I like. I will usually leave 7 days open so that if we have an unusual amount of snow, or just don’t feel like it one day we can take off with no problem.

But the first day back is always a challenge, isn’t it? Not just for them but for me too. One of the ways that I cope is to plan very little and just get the basics handled as quickly as possible.  What is your coping strategy?

My Favorite blog reads today:

Sara  from Walk Slowly Live Wildly talks abut finishing up her first year with dread locks and unpainted toenails. I liked this. It reminded me of how we all need to change up the way we do things so that we don;’t get into a rut. Apparently she is in no danger of falling into a rut.

And I enjoyed the thoughts from Red Tin Heart and am contemplating some thoughts in my own heart that her posts opened up for me.
