You know I went through high school in Texas, including an entire year of Texas Historya nd enver learned about the Republic of Texas Navy, or the Republic of Texas Marine Corps.
Marc is a leaner in the Royal Rangers program and he is getting involved in historic reenactment. He was away this weekend at seminars and came home asking if I had ever heard of the Texas Marine Corps.
I hadn’t..but you now me, I had to research it, and ended up so fascinated that I wrote an article on the history of the Texas Marine Corps. Pretty cool stuff.
Anyway, that got me thinking. How much really interesting history have I missed over the years? Here I am, 48, and sometimes I feel like there is not much new for me to learn. ha-ha.
I am going to make it a point to such out unusual history for my kids. I mean, that’s what makes education well rounded and interesting, not the stuff everyone has to learn but the really cool stuff that not many people know about.
Of Arms and the Law is not a homeschooling blog but it has this interesting post about the Civil War, with some obscure facts in the comments section as well.
Check this out about Decoy Paratrooper Dummies from WWII
Homeschool in the Woods is an excellent resource for history, whether it is obscure or not.
This is why we read living books for history rather than using dry textbooks. There is so much that we don’t know, so many fascinating facts to be found.
Finally, Jodi, at Homeschooling on a Shoestring, wrote about a cool history contest sponsored by the History Channel…check it out.
