Is that the longest title on the internet or what?

People, homeschoolers, are thinking more about the laws and scenarios that they have in a long time.  I think this is ultimately a good thing, as I said, I think we have become complacent over the years from what it was back when I started. Back then we had to walk to school int he snow, up a hill, both wa….oh wait..wrong story.

Anyway, there were some things that we knew back then that have been put on the back burner.  Maybe it is a good time to review.

1. Have a copy of your state homeschool laws.  Know what they say!  HSLDA has a great summary of the laws of each state here.   Know what the requirements are, and your rights are under your state’s laws.  This way, if you are contacted you will have everything in order and know what the law says.  Many school districts don’t even know the laws.

2. Be polite, but do not allow yourself to be railroaded or frightened. If you are contacted on the phone make an appointment to meet the official somewhere other than your home, or tell them you will get back with them, and contact your lawyer for advice.

3. If they come to your home, do not let them in, you are under no legal obligation to do so unless they have paperwork allowing them to search your home.  Doubtful.

4. Be sure that you have the records that the state requires.

5. Join one of the legal associations, like HSLDA.

6. Keep up with what is going on. The political environment is changing rapidly and it is important to maintain your voice, as a homeschooler, in government.

Being afraid, or jumping to conclusions is certainly not a good idea. However, it is unwise to stick your head in the sand, and assume things will not change, and your rights will be upheld.
